[text_block style=”style_1.png” align=”left” font_size=”24″]Fortunately, I have always been able to find consulting job even in the toughest time. I think my ability to get consulting jobs comes from my confident attitude I shown during the interview process. I developed my confidence from having successfully completed many projects from a number of clients in various industries.

When you have 10+ clients in various industries and able to perform the job successfully, you tend to have the confidence to handle anything they throw at you. That said, one of the secrets of getting consulting job is from past clients. I have had many projects from my past clients.  Once you have successfully completed a project for a client, chances are they will call you back for additional work when the needs arise. This is the easiest way to get consulting work as you don’t need to go through the interview process and compete with other consultants for the job.

Secondly, your client’s employees will be more receptive towards you as you have a track record with the company, and they have vested in you and therefore, will not easily throw you under the bus if the project runs into bumps and setbacks. The biggest secret about consulting jobs is that most of the jobs are not posted on the job board. The smart consultants get consulting job through referral from their consultant friends. During my time as a consultant, I have been asked many times by clients for referral when they need additional resource. I always refer my consultant friends as I believe in the law of reciprocity. The more you give, the more you will receive. The great thing about referral is that you will most likely get an interview if your resume has the experience and skills they need. There is no guarantee that you will get the consulting job, but the client will surely be receptive and your chances of being hired is in your favor. Don’t forget to take your consultant friend out to lunch after you got the job.

Generally, most consultants are not social (myself included) and tend to get busy and preoccupied with their job once they are on a project. But, it is very important to keep in touch with our past clients and consultant friends. You will be greatly rewarded the next time you look for a consulting job. We are developing a comprehensive process to help facility consultant referrals to our community members, and the ability to track and reward our consultant friends who generously provided the referral.
